Fab Lab collage

The Champaign-Urbana Community Fab Lab is an open and collaborative workshop space for computer-driven innovation, design and fabrication. We enable makers of all kinds to imagine, design and create using open source software and DIY equipment. We do this by working with a local and international network to actively cultivate public engagement through community-focused art, entrepreneurship, research and education.

Featured Project: Cub Scout Promise Jigsaw Puzzle

Jim Witte writes:

I'm a mentor with the cu1to1 mentoring program (http://www.cu1to1.org). I brought my 10th grade mentee to the fablab to make jigsaw puzzles that I used to teach first grade cub scouts their "cub scout promise".

Here's a link to the youtube video showing the puzzle being made in the laser cutter:

My mentee did the design on the computer, we made 10 of the puzzles. I've attached a picture of the scouts and parents putting the puzzle together.

I sent the same picture and video to the cu1to1 mentoring program. My hope here is to build bridges between facilities like the fablab and programs like the cu1to1 mentoring program.

Fab Lab Building

Fab Lab Building

Agronomy Building / Art-East Annex Studio 2

The Forest Science Laboratory, which is  home to the Champaign-Urbana Community Fab Lab, was built in 1905.  The building was originally known as the "Old Agronomy Storehouse," and has served at various times as a horse barn, garage, seed storehouse and photography laboratory. Perry G. Holden efficiently organized the Department of Agronomy that occupied the building into divisions of Soil Physics and Biology, Farm Management, Crops, and Farm Mechanics by 1900. Since 1967 the building has been called the Forest Science Laboratory.
